Unlike art instruction, art therapy is conducted with the aim of building life skills, limit problem behaviors, and promoting healthy self-expression. Art therapy is a natural fit for autism for several reasons. One of the hallmarks of autism is impaired communication. Verbal self-expression and language is often especially difficult. People with autism are often highly visual thinkers. Expressing feelings and ideas through images is very natural for such people and can be a welcome relief from the daily struggle to use words effectively. The Open Paint Workshop and curriculum is designed to compliment current treatments and to help individuals express themselves in every way possible on the artistic scale.
(Applied Behavior Analysis option available upon request)

People often ask why they should talk to a therapist when they could just talk to a friend? Clients often come to therapy in distress but without awareness of the behaviors and interactions which are causing them pain. Listening closely to clients’ stories while interacting with them, our therapists here at Aurtism are able to help people identify and change negative patterns of behavior.

This is the first step towards change and growth. Life can be a hard…but we are here to help you stay mentally strong.

Group Therapy

(Tuesday & Thursday)

monthly membership

Joining a group of strangers may sound intimidating at first, but the Aurtism Group Therapy provides benefits that individual therapy may not. Group members are almost always surprised by how rewarding the group experience can be.

Groups can act as a support network and a sounding board. Other members of the group often help you come up with specific ideas for improving a difficult situation or life challenge. Regularly talking and listening to others while painting also helps you put your own problems in perspective. Many people experience mental health difficulties, but few speak openly about them to people they don’t know well. Oftentimes, you may feel like you are the only one struggling —BUT YOU ARE NOT. It can be a relief to hear others discuss what they’re going through, and realize you’re not alone while enjoying our happy facility.
